This is the third installment of Outfit Repeating — a look back on what I have gravitated towards and worn during the last season. If you want to catch up on the previous look backs, you can read the winter version here and the spring version here.
Tanks
I leaned heavily into tanks this summer. While it was a mild summer in comparison to previous years, it was still a doozy. I found myself in a space where I didn’t want to think very much about what I was wearing. Rather, I found myself focusing on one item and building my outfit around that. Oftentimes, I’d pair a tank with shorts because it was easy. This summer, I also discovered that I love a high neck tank. I acquired several that I know will be worn well into fall. My two favorites? This knitted version that can be easily tucked and this textured cream option, a twist on a classic.
Linen Trousers
I continued wearing my linen trousers in the heat. Specifically these and I feel like I can’t shut up about these trousers. I found wearing them to work and then switching up the accessories and shoes to transition them into a night out flowed seamlessly. If you were to ask me what my favorite look of the summer was, it’d be the one below. I’m not sure what it was about it, but I felt so cool strutting around in it. I think it was partly because I had finally gotten the pants hemmed and they fit perfectly — a testament to clothes that fit your body properly are ones you feel the most confident and beautiful in.
Sandals
One could say this is a given since it was summer after all, however, I had been on the hunt for strappy sandals for the last few years. I have narrow feet and strappy sandals often do not work for me. I had my eye on several but ended up trying on a pair from A.EMERY. While they aren’t exactly a strappy sandal, I love that I now have an option that isn’t just a flip flop. Though, I really like this elevated flip flop option I also purchased. I’ve been reaching for those very frequently as they go with everything. If you read my August favorites, then these are familiar to you. While fall officially starts on Sunday, I’ll have about 6 more weeks before I consider packing these away.
Black Shorts
Another thing that might sound familiar if you read last week’s newsletter are these shorts. I have several colors and I find myself reaching for the black version more often. As previously mentioned, the color made them feel easier to elevate when I wanted a little something more out of my outfit.
Dresses
It wouldn’t be summer without an array of dresses. When it comes to wearing dresses, I think we can all agree that we want something that is easy to throw on. I think this is partly why I have so many smocked top dresses that allow me to easily go sans bra. This summer I also discovered these tank dresses I’ve mentioned before and with a few accessories — they made me feel chic and put together on those days it was just too hot to think about getting dressed.
Belts as Statement Pieces
It’s no secret that I lean more toward minimalist dressing with touches of unpredictability (what I call everything I own in my closet that doesn’t fit a minimalistic approach because I don’t have a better way to describe it). More than anything, I found myself reaching for pieces that would stand out and make a statement. I used these pieces to create interest in what otherwise would be a simple outfit (though, nothing wrong with that!). I think the key to feeling like you have endless possibilities is having a variety of accessories to add dimension (think belts, jewelry, purses, layering, etc).
So I found myself reaching for pieces that elevated or gave an interesting dimension to what I was wearing — like my Brancusi belt (I’ve mentioned this before, and for continued transparency this belt was kindly gifted but I would 100% buy it with my own money). I’ve previously mentioned it here. Additionally, my silver cuff (I bought mine in CDMX but very similar here) that I like to wear with gold jewelry and hardware.
Also, I have to mention
, writer of Pie For Breakfast, who talked about layering as a statement in her latest newsletter. It was a great read and I’d highly recommend it! She also has fantastic style and I want to be her when I grow up. She has so much fun with her clothes. All featured items can be found here.
I’d love to hear what you’ve been wearing this summer and what you look forward to wearing during the fall!
