Do you ever spot something in the wild or on the internet and immediately get captivated by it? But then your conscious shopping heart tells you to think on it and by the time you’ve made up your mind, it’s sold out? If yes, let’s start a club because this happens a little too often to me. I thought it’d be fun to start a series on what I’d like to call Missed Connections — things that made me stop in my tracks and had me questioning my slow consumerism habits.
La Maregold Sammy Dress in Daisy Print
I saw this while out and about in the peak heat of summer. I complimented the stranger in the dress and asked her where it was from. She mentioned Maregold, which was a company I had never heard of before.
It was a beautiful yellow floral pattern that was not too busy and perfect for a hot summer day. It can be worn strapless thanks to the elastic around the top and could easily be elevated for a date night. Even as Fall nears, I think of her often and wonder what could have been. I hope she makes an appearance next Spring or Summer in the same print. If you like the cut, Maregold has released this dress in other prints since — like this similar yellow floral print, gingham print, and polka dots.
Matteau Shirred Chocolate Brown Dress
I’ve been thinking of this dress for over a year. I initially saw her while browsing on Net-a-Porter last summer. If I’m being honest, the price tag was never something I could justify. I kept looking it up several times a week, hoping it would go on sale and it’d fall within my budget. That never happened unfortunately and it sold out well before the season was over.
There have been different colors and variations of the dress (like this one shoulder version here and a flowy option here) that I’ve come across since, but none that had me in the same trance. Something about this chocolate dress just had me in a chokehold.
Romane Jacket with White Stripes
I originally saw this jacket in February of this year. It was sold out, but the listing was still up. I was hoping that was a sign it would be an item that’d be coming back in the Fall. Fast forward 6 months, and the jacket was removed from the website and replaced with another style in the same fabric. It made me realize that it wasn’t just the striped look that I wanted, but also the cut of the jacket. The one I was eyeing is slightly shorter, has two front pockets and breaks away from the formal, structured suit look. The newest variation is slightly more oversized, longer and looks more like a jacket that belongs to a suit.
Since then I’ve acquired a similar jacket (also striped!) and I was hoping for a different look. For what it’s worth, the fabric is incredibly soft, and I did end up grabbing the trousers in the same print.
Adidas Handball Spezials in Preloved Red
I don’t recall when I first saw this color, but I do recall being immediately enamored with it. Sadly, they were sold out, and haven’t come back in my size. While we were in Mexico City, we stumbled upon an Adidas store and while they had my color, they were unfortunately also sold out of my size. Funny enough, my husband and our friend ended up loving the color. Luck was on their side, because their respective sizes were in stock. I now live vicariously through them.
A.P.C. Denim Shirt
As you know, I love a good denim shirt — really anything denim. When I originally saw it (similar style here since the original link is no longer visible), I told myself I didn’t need another denim shirt. What I loved about it was the heavier look compared to a typical denim shirt. It’s almost a hybrid of a shirt and a jacket — the ideal mix.

I kept going back to it and once I had decided I did in fact “need” it — it was gone. I know denim shirts are a dime a dozen, but I think this one will have me on the lookout for an oversized, medium weight denim shirt. It looks like they’ve released a slight variation of it for the upcoming season.

Not to get spiritual about clothing, but writing this article made me realize that while I missed out on an item I really like, it redirected me toward an alternative or it opened up an avenue to something else. I’m proud of not jumping on every impulse I had, listening to my own advice and using generic wishlists to make well informed decisions.

Oh my gosh I am totally a member of the club! I love this post because I am a super methodical shopper (read slow to purchase because I’m overthinking) and I regularly miss out on items!! Especially pieces from TRR or second-hand.
So so relate to this post! Definitely have things that were genuinely so good that “got away,” but also, it didn’t kill me any to just use what I already have instead tbh! I survived hahah. Such a nice, balanced read, ty 💗💗
